During optimal water conditions, the journey begins at Crockett’s Run and ends at the Canoe Livery (usually in spring and early summer). It covers approximately 5 miles and takes 3-4 hours.
During low-water conditions, the trip departs at the Natural Rockbridge Landing and concludes at Crockett’s Run. During this trip, you will be dropped off at Trip 2 Natural Rockbridge and picked up at Trip 1 Crockett’s Run when you are done. The change is because the water moves faster in the upper part of the Hocking River in low-water conditions. This trip covers an approximate distance of 2.4 miles and takes approximately 2-3 hours. -

Before European settlement, the Hocking River was essential for Native American tribes like the Shawnee and Delaware, who used it for fishing, transportation, and fresh water. The name “Hocking” comes from the Shawnee word “Hock hocking,” meaning “bottle-shaped” or “twisted,” reflecting the river’s winding path.
In the 19th century, the Hocking Canal became a key coal mining and iron production area. The river and the Hocking Canal, built in the 1830s, facilitated the transport of these resources, helping Logan develop into a bustling industrial town. However, the era of canals was brief, as railroads soon took over as the primary transportation method. The Hocking Canal can be seen en route to our Trip 2 launch point.
